VANITAS

The Vanitas series explores the idea of an embodied experience within contemporary society, and was developed after my father lost two of his fingers in an accident. Seeing my father physically disfigured impacted my own sense of mortality and motivated my photographic investigation of this subject. During the process of rebuilding my father's hand from medical parts and repurposed skin and flesh from his own body, I began to question the nature of one's existence within a post-human context. Specifically, I wanted to illustrate that despite technological transformation in some aspects of our lives, our existence is a reality still rooted in the materiality of the body. The Vanitas series has expanded the visual landscape of my practice and has provided my work with a visually seductive entry-point and a rife symbol (gold/alchemy) for the larger philosophical ideas at play.
